Depression is something that is increasingly common, yet very poorly understood. It can wreak havoc in the life of the sufferer but is invisible to the outside world. It can strike anyone at any time. The World Health Organization estimates that around 4.4% of the population, around 300 million people are affected by depression. The reasons for depression can be internal (hormonal imbalance) or external( loss of a loved one, failure at work). It is treated depending upon the severity of the depression which can be mild, moderate and severe.
One way to deal with depression is to consult a psychiatrist you might prescribe you with anti-depressants but not all of those who are depressed want to be treated with drugs. These drugs usually have side effects like loss of sexual desire, insomnia, and loss of appetite. There are many natural ways to boost mood and alleviate depression.

Ways to tackle depression
Let us look into some of the ways depression can be tackled
Exercise
A healthy body is a sign of a healthy mind so it is important to have a fitness routine. Any form of exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and dopamine that not only boost your mood but have a positive impact on your well-being.
Meditation
Close your eyes and sit in a quiet spot. Focus on your breathing and be aware of your body. Indian and Buddhist monks have practiced meditation for centuries, which perhaps explains why they look so peaceful. Meditation helps in quelling anxiety and depression and since it is natural, it does not have any harmful side effects.
Music
Listening to music is one of my favorite pastimes and it can be yours too. According to the UK-based Journal of Advanced Nursing, music can reduce depression by 25%. In addition, it works wonders for your self-confidence and image.
Get a pet
If you want someone to love you unconditionally, never judge and always around for emotional support, then you need to get a pet. There are many studies that suggest that having a cat or a dog as a pet has therapeutic effects. These animals are used in assisted therapy and have become a globally accepted form of treatment for mild anxiety depression and PTSD.
Journaling
It’s easy to get swept up in our emotions and feelings but sometimes just the act of putting these emotions on paper can help you process them better. If there is something that is hurting you or causing you to be depressed, writing about it will help you label these negative feelings and experiences. Once you are aware of your feelings, you can then begin to understand and try to resolve the situation, or even better, arrive at a solution. Expressive writing can work wonders for your mind and help you focus on what’s important in life.
