Stoic packs in journaling, meditation and mood tracking, with a separate paid AI tier. Compare the Stoic journal app vs Reverie on AI, privacy and price.

Jonah loved the idea of Stoic. Morning intention, evening review, a Marcus Aurelius quote to start the day. He even liked the breathwork.

But after a month, he noticed he was doing the routine more than reflecting in it. He’d tap through the morning check-in and the mood slider, skim a quote, and open the app blocker. The one thing he’d come for, thinking clearly about his own life, kept getting squeezed out by everything else in the app.

What Stoic does well

Stoic is thoughtfully designed and incredibly broad. You get morning and evening routines, guided journals, CBT and therapy-prep templates, dream journaling, mood and sleep tracking, meditation, breathwork and even an app blocker. It says it has more than 4 million users, and its App Store rating (4.8 from 35,000+ ratings) shows how much people like it.

If you want a single “self-care operating system,” Stoic is one of the best.

Where it can fall short

The AI costs extra. Stoic’s AI Mentors come with a separate, higher-priced tier, listed at $69.99–$99.99/year on the App Store. Premium alone doesn’t include them.

So much app, so little reflection. With a dozen tools in one place, journaling can shrink to a check-in on your way to everything else.

Bugs and paywalled privacy. Reviewers mention bugs (including a save button that doesn’t work) and privacy lock settings that sit behind the paywall.

The privacy label raised questions. Stoic’s own website promises strong privacy, but when we checked, its Google Play data safety section said data isn’t encrypted and can’t be deleted, and that some data is shared with third parties. It may simply be an out-of-date label, but for a journal app it’s worth checking before you pour your heart in.

The Stoics didn’t need an app blocker. They needed a quiet page and an honest question.

Why Reverie is the focused alternative

One job, done deeply

Reverie doesn’t try to be your meditation app, sleep tracker and habit coach. It does one thing: helps you understand yourself through reflection.

AI included, and it remembers

There’s no separate AI tier. Reverie Premium ($48/year) includes an AI that remembers what you’ve written and notices patterns: the recurring worry, the person who always shows up on your good days, the decision you keep circling. Marcus Aurelius wrote Meditations to examine his own mind. Reverie asks the questions that help you do the same.

Clear privacy basics

Reverie never sells your journal and doesn’t use it to train AI models. It’s encrypted in transit, and you can export your data in the app and ask us to delete your account and entries. (Reverie isn’t end-to-end encrypted, because the AI needs to read your entries to reflect on them. We think you should know that.)

A weekly look back

Seneca recommended reviewing each day before sleep. Reverie takes that a step further: each week, it connects your entries into a short reflection, so you can see where you acted on your values and where you drifted.

Keep your Stoic practice, change the tool

You don’t have to give up the philosophy. Try this evening review in Reverie:

  1. What did I control today, and what didn’t I?
  2. Where did I act on my values?
  3. What would I do differently tomorrow?

Write your answers, then see what Reverie asks back.

Install Reverie from Google Play and try it tonight. It’s free to start.

Where Reverie fits in

Jonah kept his meditation app and moved his evening review to Reverie. In week two, it pointed out that every entry where he felt “out of control” was about his commute, which he could change, not his job, which he couldn’t. He started leaving 20 minutes earlier. The Stoics would have approved.

Reverie is a reflection tool, not therapy, and it will point you toward real professional support when you need more than a journal.
